Melissa Benn is an accomplished author and education activist, known for her critical analyses of education policies in the UK. She is a founding member of the Local Schools Network, and served as Chair of Comprehensive Future from 2014 to 2018. She is also a Visiting Professor in the department of Education, Language and Psychology at York St John University, and writes a regular column in Teach Secondary.
Melissa joined the Ofsted inquiry to address the widespread concerns among school leaders about the punitive and unfair judgments made on schools struggling with complex social and economic issues. She is also concerned about the increased control Ofsted appears to have over the curriculum and its close ties to the government. Through the inquiry, Melissa hopes to highlight the major problems of Ofsted’s current operations and provide realistic proposals for a more supportive and effective school inspection system.
